The brief was to design an advert to advertise a performance of the firebird to be performed by Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra at the Symphony Hall Birmingham. I started by conducting desk-based research by reviewing the rise of the phoenix in world art and album covers previously designed, all whilst listening to ‘The Firebird’ itself and found it to be a powerful piece of music that builds into an explosive sound then becomes quieter – link: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?V=kd1xykgnoe..
For the look and feel I wanted to combine the conductor’s image with a phoenix Illustration and was inspired by eastern art especially the depiction of dragons and peacocks. I started by hand drawing the wings of the phoenix and replicating the eye shape of the peacocks feathers, which I then took into Illustrator and built the wings first which developed onscreen – see the design process below.
